When I arrived from Los Angeles to Miami, the pilot announced all the highways through Miami were closed due to rioting. It wasn't long before I was covering more than just Super Bowl XXIII week which the Los Angeles Times had sent me there to cover. This was made after a sniper had been firing at these officers and had them pinned down before there was a lull in the firing. Five photographers including me and Brian Smith, then with the Miami Herald, were also pinned down while standing shoulder to shoulder behind the telephone pole in the background. I approached the officers when the firing stopped only to find we came under fire again. I made this frame as they reacted then I jumped into the patrol car.
