Five judges on a panel try a man for murder over tennis shoes in Tsing Tao, China. Photo was made with the then new Kodachrome 200 with two small strobes mounted on window frames and low window light. The story I was told is that persons convicted end up having their families charged the cost of the bullet which does them in. The courtroom was freshly painted before the shoot. Just by chance I was in this position as I was circling the room at this point having just been behind the bench and shooting with a motor drive along with strobes. My Chinese guide asked if I wanted them to do it again because I only made one frame as the gesture ended. I declined. This ran double truck in the David Cohen and Rick Smolan The Day in the Life of China book in 1989.
